Ulaanbaatar is the capital city of Mongolia. The 1 of 3 of the population lives in Ulaanbaatar and it’s a modern metropolis. This day we will have city tour including Gandan Monastery and the National Museum. Rest of the day you have some time to prepare for the big trip.
We will get to Ulgii via lacal flights. Ulgii is the capital city of westernmost of the 21 provinces of Mongolia, Bayan-Ulgii Province. The country's only Muslim and Kazakh-majority aimag, it was established in August 1940. The culture of the Kazakh majority is strongly influenced by Islamic traditions. There is also a madrasah (Islamic school). The aimag is famous for the traditional practice of hunting with trained eagles. The captive eagles work in a similar way as hunting falcons do. While eagles are used for hunting in other parts of the world, particularly Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, the practice is most common in Bayan-Ulgii, where an estimated 80 percent of the world's eagle hunters live. The annual Golden Eagle Festival is held in Ulgii every October to display the skill of eagle hunters, with about 70 hunters participating per year
After breakfast we will head to Sagsai where the eagle festival is held. Dark, rocky mountainous terrain forms the backdrop to the festivities, which incorporate an opening ceremony, parade, cultural exhibitions, demonstrations and handcrafts in the centre of the town of Ulgii, followed by sporting activities and competitions. Dressed in full eagle hunting regalia and mounted on groomed decorated horses, the entrants compete for the awards of Best Turned Out Eagle and Owner; Best Eagle at Hunting Prey and Best Eagle at Locating Its Owner from a Distance. Other sporting activities include horse racing, archery and the highly entertaining Bushkashi – goat skin tug of war on horseback.
Get back to Ulgii. We can go over Ulgii City for the day and stay overnight at a hotel.
We will get back to Ulaanbaatar via local flight. After lunch you can have leisure time to go shopping. The guide will offer you the shopping centers to find what you want to buy. Amazing performance of traditional dance and folk in the evening.
